Business Librarian: Position Description
POSITION: Business Librarian
WORK ADMINIATRATOR: Director, West Campus and Policy Sciences and Economics Libraries
REPORTS TO: Dean
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:The Business Librarian provides a full range of information support primarily to the Mays Business School and clients of the West Campus Library. The Business Librarian participates in collection development, reference, instruction and liaison activities. The Business Librarian serves as the subject specialist and liaison to the department of Marketing and the department of Information & Operations Management. The Business Librarian serves as full-time, tenure-track faculty and participates in scholarly research and publication.
Subject Specialist Liaison to Academic Departments and Centers
Develop and maintain regular communication with library representatives, department heads, relevant faculty, staff, researchers and students in assigned subjects and departments in order to understand the constituents' teaching and research interests and needs and explain and interpret library programs and resources.
- Assess and share knowledge of the interests and needs within discipline groups, functional areas, and through administrative channels in order to work collaboratively to develop collections and services and meet the constituents' needs.
- Assigned areas are Marketing, Information & Operations Management and discipline related fields
Effectively deliver reference service to students, staff, faculty and community. Provide reference service to faculty, staff, and students at public service points and subject specific consultation by appointment.
- Provide broad-based reference support to the reference desk staff
- Actively participate in all forms of reference services (live chat, email, phone, etc.)
- Strengthen the knowledge-base of all staff providing reference service by sharing expertise, providing feedback on relevant training issues, assisting in training and actively participating in Reference Team meetings.
- Lead and participate in cross-training with members of the discipline group.
- Effectively interact with customers of diverse backgrounds in providing services.
- Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
- Provide feedback to the West Campus Library Director on relevant training issues and assisting in training.
Design, deliver, assess, and promote library instruction programs to support a comprehensive libraries-wide Information Literacy Program. Build on current skills and knowledge of information literacy theory and practice in order to share with colleagues and enhance the overall quality of the TAMU Libraries’ instruction program.
- Design and deliver subject area, or resource, specific information / training sessions for students and faculty, as well as for community groups or the general public.
- Collaborate with faculty to develop instruction sessions
- Develop & maintain Web guides, finding aids, etc.
- Develop sessions for internal staff training
- Participate in the development of seminars to promote business information literacy and complement the teaching activities of the Mays Business School
Effectively build and manage information resources in assigned subject areas of Marketing and Information & Operations Management through a balanced, broad-based approach, as well as participate in discipline related collection development.
- Integrate analysis and assessment into collection development activities to facilitate and enhance data-driven collection decisions
- Lead and/or participate in determining collection needs for users
- Monitor and manage approval plan of subject areas
- Evaluate gift materials in subject areas
- Encourage, evaluate and respond to monograph suggestions and serial requests from users and select materials to be firm ordered
- Communicate with vendors, professional associations and professional networks to become/remain aware of new/developing resources and evaluate for acquisitions or replacement of current products.
- Formulate and regularly update formal written collection policy statements for areas of selection responsibilities
- Develop and maintain regular communication with relevant faculty, staff, researchers and students and members of Business, Political Sciences and Economics Discipline Group
- Work collaboratively with others having collection responsibilities in related subject areas, as well as with staff in acquisitions and collection management
- Educate assigned departments on scholarly communication issues including economic issues, authors’ rights, and author and publisher perspectives. Support and promote the scholarly services (repository, electronic journals, online conferences, wikis, blogs, etc.) of the University Libraries and the Texas Digital Library.
Research, Professional Development and Service
Participate in scholarly activities and professional service commensurate with TAMU Libraries faculty status requirements.
- Keep current on business topics, librarianship trends and practices, and areas of interest
- Serve on committees for library, university, and professional organizations, as requested or elected
- Coordinate and/or participate on special projects approved by the Director.
